Worcester Wolves 86 - Durham Wildcats 72

Worcester Wolves moved joint top of the British Basketball League this weekend after they saw off a determined Wildcats side.

The Wildcats travelled to Worcester in November and really should have won the game in the last few seconds. Victory over the Durham side seemed to spur the Wolves on to better things as they surged up the table and now appear to be sustaining a genuine attempt to win the title – the fact that the Wildcats went so close less than two months ago is evidence that fine margins make a big difference in this league.

This time around the first quarter was another close affair with both sides exchanging baskets before Worcester finally edged 21-16 in front.  In recent weeks the Wildcats have had some strong second quarters but on this occasion the second phase favoured the home side as they edged into a sizeable lead at 46-33.

The second half initially saw much of the same as both sides traded baskets with Worcester ultimately coming out on top. However, as is always the case, the Wildcats fought to the end, winning the fourth quarter and narrowing the deficit to just 16 points at the buzzer.

Mario Flaherty top scored for the Wildcats with 20 points whilst Paul Elderkin continued his impressive New Year form scoring 16.

Next weekend the Wildcats play host to the Newcastle Eagles in what will be the first league derby between the two sides.
